A Guide to Cleaning & Cleansing for Gemstones

In the recent years, the world has come around to appreciating the healing abilities and rejuvenating vibes of gemstones. As science continues to provide more evidence about their benefits for physical and mental health, more people are now considering wearing precious and semi-precious gemstones.
Since gemstones are fragile and can be an expensive investment, they require care and attention. Apart from this, gemstones tend to lose their therapeutic properties with time. Regular cleaning and cleansing can help retain the appeal and power of the stones for a long time.

Gemstone experts say that rinsing the stones with water once a week is the best way to keep their shine and strength intact. The frequency of rinsing can vary depending upon the exposure of the stone to dust or other weather elements. While a mild soap can be used to remove any dirt stuck to the surface, hard detergents and chemical cleaners should not be used on any kind of gemstone jewellery. Wiping the jewellery thoroughly after rinsing prevents any corrosion on the metal surface due to moisture.

When worn as jewellery, gemstones constantly attract positive vibes to the wearer and absorb the negative energy around them. This causes the stones to gradually become impotent in terms of benefits. Cleansing has been known to rejuvenate the energy and powers of the gemstones. While different cultures and experts have varied ways of cleansing, here are some popular ways to recharge gemstones to get maximum benefits:

Sunlight Cleanse
Sunlight is known to rejuvenate not only humans, but gemstones as well. Experts recommend keeping stone jewellery in an area with indirect sunlight for 15-20 minutes in a month. Sunbathing loosens the negative energy accumulated in the stone. Special care needs to be taken about how much sunlight the jewellery is exposed to, as too much direct sunlight can bleach the natural colour and lustre of the stone.

Moonlight Bathing
While moonlight bathing is not the ideal way to cleanse all gemstones, it is believed to rejuvenate a number of precious and semi-precious stones. According to gemstone experts, the gravitational pull of the Moon scrapes off all negativity from the stone’s surface.

Rejuvenating with Soil
Since all the gemstones are mined, they are believed to have derived their powers from the earth. This is why many gemstone researchers suggest keeping gemstone jewellery in soil for a couple of hours. A pot with soil or a home garden is ideal for rejuvenating stones as it ensures the stone does not get lost. Rinse the jewellery with lukewarm water after removing it from the soil to ensure no dirt, soil or insects are stuck to it.
