Guide to Gemstones - Colors & Meanings

A Gemstone is often described as a ‘stone’ or a ‘crystal’. Stone is just a general term for any inorganic substance that comes out of the earth. Some stones are rocks and some are minerals.

Minerals arise naturally within the earth’s crust, are inorganic solids with crystalline structures. Each mineral has their own definite chemical composition. Minerals are recognized by 7 Properties Color, Luster, Hardness, Streak, Cleavage, Fracture and Crystal form.

The study of minerals is called Mineralogy and Gemology is a branch under Mineralogy. Certain rocks are also used for making jewellery and they are considered as Gemstones.

A gemstone is either precious or semiprecious stone , they are cut, faceted, polished and are set  into a piece of jewellery  or to decorate any product in an aesthetic & exquisite way. Thus it becomes a Luxury Product!

All crystals are not gemstones. For example, rock salt or sugar crystals, both are crystals but they are not gemstones because neither are rare nor durable. They are plain crystals with orderly pattern of constituent atoms and molecules.

A stone to be considered a ‘gemstone’, when it possesses the following  3 qualities:

1.     Beauty: Based on the depth of color and degree of transparency.

2.     Rarity: Based on factors of supply and demand, by fashion and scarcity of the source material.

3.     Durability: Based on the property of hardness

For Example: Fluorite is a pretty, soft stone, available in abundance, very cheap, so they are not considered to be a “gemstone", even though it can be used for making a nice pendant or ring!

 Traditionally ‘precious stones’ command a premium price due to their extraordinary colour, brilliance and extreme rarity. Example: Diamond, Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald

Pure gemstones are also used in Gem-therapy by individuals for gaining personal well-being and for attaining material & spiritual objectives in life.
